  1. Welcome to the world of Racontex. To install the system on your  computer, type 
  2. INSTALL  D:   \SUBDIR where D: is the drive you wish to install to and  \SUBDIR 
  3. is  the  directory  you  wish  to  put  it  in.  Do not forget the colon or the 
  4. backslash and be sure to leave a space between the colon and the backslash.
  5.  
  6. (If you  are  installing  from  a  floppy  disk, start from the prompt for that
  7. floppy disk i.e. if the disk is in drive A, start at the A> prompt.  If you are
  8. installing from a downloaded copy, start at the  prompt  for  the  subdirectory
  9. holding the downloaded files TRANSFER.EXE TRANSWIN.EXE and INSTALL.EXE.)

  11. The files are compressed into the files TRANSFER.EXE & TRANSWIN.EXE,  and  this
  12. procedure will extract them.  If you wish to  examine the files  first  you may
  13. extract them using LHA (copyright YOSHI).
  14.  
  15. The compression was selected  to  ensure  that  the  install  procedure and the 
  16. compressed  files would  all  fit on two  360K floppy disks (or one of a bigger 
  17. size).  If you have the files on a single disk, and wish to transfer them  to 2
  18. disks,  copy all  files  but  TRANSWIN.EXE  to  the  first  disk  and copy just 
  19. TRANSWIN.EXE to the second.   The INSTALL program will detect this and call for
  20. the second disk.  If you have the files on two disks, and want them on a single 
  21. disk, just copy them all to the same disk.

  23. If the product was downloaded as an archive file from a bulletin board, it  may
  24. fit on a single 360K floppy disk since it may not include the file VBRUN300.DLL
  25. which is required for the Windows front end (not required for DOS only).    The
  26. VBRUN300.DLL file is  widely  available on BBS systems and may be inserted into 
  27. the file TRANSWIN.EXE using LHA by disk  vendors who  wish to distribute a full
  28. version.

  30. The install procedure will automatically invoke the RACONTEX create function to 
  31. produce  an  on-line  manual  as  a  RACONTEX database, and this README file as 
  32. another.  You will see the loading process in operation, and the databases will
  33. be there for you to experiment with searches.

  35. If  you  have  a copy  of LHA you may extract the file MANUAL from TRANSFER.EXE 
  36. before you do the install, and print it for review.

  39. If this  is an  unlicensed demonstrator version you may use it for a maximum 30
  40. day period for evaluation and you  may distribute  copies of  it to  others for
  41. similar evaluation,  but you must distribute it without modification and in the
  42. form in which you received it.   This  means that  if you  downloaded it  as an
  43. archive  file  from  a  bulletin  board you may distribute only that unmodified
  44. archive.  Unlicensed  demonstrator  versions  will  place a "commercial" at the
  45. beginning of any search performed on documents prepared by them.

  47. Licensed versions  bear a  code identifying the licensee, and it is a violation
  48. of copyright to make and distribute  copies  other  than  as  specified  in the
  49. licence.  You may freely distribute RACONTEX databases, but not licenced copies
  50. of the RACONTEX programs themselves,  except  as  detailed  below.   Publishers
  51. may make an  arrangement to distribute the search program along with  databases
  52. they may be selling, on a royalty basis (contact the author for details).

  54. To  encourage  the  "Shareware"  method  of  software distribution, "Shareware" 
  55. authors may  freely  distribute  the  search  module  (files  RACONTEX.EXE  and 
  56. RACONTEX.HLP) along with their products if they use RACONTEX to prepare on-line
  57. documentation to be distributed with the product.

  59. If you  have old  documents produced  by an unlicensed demonstrator version you
  60. may update the licence by loading the system  as instructed  in the  manual and
  61. using the  UPDATE program  supplied.  This will replace the licence information
  62. in those documents with that  appropriate  to  this  copy,  and  if  this  is a
  63. licensed copy  the commercial you saw at the beginning of searches of them will
  64. go away.  For example, if you have a suite of files  for a  searchable document
  65. named FRED,  you would  enter UPDATE FRED (including drive and path information
  66. if needed).  Please note that UPDATE will refuse to work on files produced by a
  67. licensed (i.e.  non-demonstrator) copy  of the system to avoid compromising the
  68. copyright of those who use Racontex form to publish documents.

  70. This version of  RACONTEX  will  work  with  either DOS or Windows.

  164. The RACONTEX  package includes an 82 byte file LICENCE.PGF  which contains an
  165. identification  line  displayed  on  the  title  screen  for  any  searchable
  166. databases produced.  For the unlicensed  version this displays a demo ID, and
  167. forces a "commercial" screen to be viewed at the beginning of a search.

  169. Registration  provides  the  latest  version  on  disk,  with  the licensee's
  170. identification in LICENCE.PGF and without  the  commercial.  Allows  this  to 
  171. replace those for databases produced by demo versions.

  173. Registration also provides a printed manual, and support either by mail or via 
  174. Compuserve for a 90 day period at no charge.

  177. by a REGISTER program in the package which requires a validation number which

  183. Registration Database (GO SWREG).   Racontex  is  Registration  ID 92 in that

  188. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  189. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  190. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  191. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  192. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  193. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  194. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  197. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific

  199. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are

  201. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of

  205. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their

  214. product, you don't pay for it.

  225. Racontex is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  226. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  227. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  228. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  229. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  230. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  231. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  232. useful and find that you are using Racontex and continue to use
  233. Racontex after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  234. istration payment of $100(US) to Guy Software.  The $100(US)
  235. registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  236. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  237. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  238. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  239. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  240. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  241. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  242. same time.

  246. copies of Racontex within 30 days of first use or their license
  247. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  248. tacting Guy Software.

  251. first contact Guy Software at the address below for authorization.
  252. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  253. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  254. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  255. Racontex immediately (However Guy Software must still be advised so
  256. that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
  257. version of Racontex.).
